Dean Herrington is at it again.
The longtime high school coach has a way with developing quarterbacks, and his new project is junior John Sanders who threw for 248 yards and five touchdowns on 18 of 31 passing in La Canada St. Francis' 58-13 win over West Ranch Friday night.
Sanders also ran for 102 yards and a touchdown off just seven carries.
The Golden Knights trailed 13-7 before scoring 51 straight points. It was Sanders' first career start.
"I felt comfortable with my receivers," Sanders said Saturday morning over the phone. "But I didn't expect to score six touchdowns."
Sanders' go-to target was Preston Jernegan, who caught eight passes for 92 yards and four touchdowns.
Sanders is only 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, but Herrington says it's his accuracy and escapeabilty that sets him apart.
"He's small, but sees the field really well," Herrington said of Sanders. "We hand clocked his forty time at 4.60. He's got fast-twitch athletic ability."
Herrington's most notable quarterbacks are Kyle Boller (Hart/Cal), Matt Moore (Hart/Oregon State) and Vernon Adams (Alemany/Eastern Washington/Oregon) — all of them reached the professional level.
"John is a lot like Vernon Adams. He was small, but he knew where everyone was," Herrington said.
His more recent successful signal callers were Brevin White (Paraclete/Princeton), CJ Montes (Paraclete/New Mexico), and Jack Jacobs (St. Francis/Fresno State).
Sanders' younger brother, Shawn, is a freshman kicker that made a 42-yard field goal in the win Friday night. He also had the leg for a 51-yarder, but was off the mark.
The family lives in Mojave, so the drive home from La Canada wasn't quick. But it was enjoyable.
"We were talking a lot about the game on the way home," John Sander said. "My dad was really happy."
St. Francis will host Mira Costa in its next game on Aug. 25.
